Nicknames

The other day I was watching TV with Mel and boyfriend and I said something to boyfriend but I called him by one of his many nicknames I have for him. Mel stares at me and she said "Did you really just call him that?" uhhh... yes? maybe? no? She then went on to ask me what nicknames I have for him. Oh goodness. So it got me thinking about nicknames and how they change and mean different things. In one of my classes last semester I learned that when you give someone a nickname you are claiming them as yours. Explains why your nicknames, either good or bad, come from those who love you or unfortunately, those who want to hurt you. When I was younger everyone in my family would call my Krissy and it passed on through middle school with my best friend at the time. When I got to high school I didn't really have any nicknames, in fact I thought they were stupid. Well, when I got to college my friends decided it would be fun to give each other nicknames. Uhm, alright? So I went along with it. Thus I was deemed with the nickname Koko. Wanna meet Koko?

Koko is a gorilla who learned sign language. Whatttt? Yup. First semester we walked into one of our education classes and the name Koko was on the board. My friends loved it and decided that was my nickname. When I found out who Koko was I refused to be called that. As time has gone on I'm okay with it and even let them tag me in pictures of monkeys. I'm such a good sport. I've come to learn that nicknames really are someone's way of making you theirs in a special way. That's why I have so many for boyfriend, Linsey, and Melly. Here are some of them!

Linsey
Lin
Lins
totally unoriginal!

Melissa
Mel
Melly
Smelly
Smelissa
Sad life for her, right.

Boyfriend (don't laugh, they're kinda silly!)
Booberry
Babes
Mad
Maddie
Boo boo bear
Doughnut
really, any sickening lovey-dovey name!

My nicknames over the years
Krissy
Kris
Missy Krissy
Pissy Krissy (not too fond of this one)
Koko
Breadstick

What are some of your nicknames and how did you get them?

LOL....

My ex used to make jokes and call me Congo. He didn't really mean that I looked like a monkey but it was his way for saying I was the most adorable thing ever and as stupid as it sounds...ahaha...he said it with so much love!

He was just a jokester period but the name was so personal that if he called another girl that I probably would've broken up with him if he said that over words like baby & etc (he thought those words were overused)

I haven't been given nicknames that much in my life. My mom used to call me amazon cause I was always soooo tall. My name is Morgan so in high school some people called me Morgs. I can't really think of any other ones. Haha!

Haha! Aww- I have always loved Koko the gorilla ever since I first read about her in "American Girl" magazine. I think that's a wonderful nickname to have :)

I've noticed how many nicknames my dog (and my past dog) has. I feel like I get too into using that obnoxious baby voice to pets and then it leads to obnoxious nicknames, lol.

I love this post!

Growing up I never really had nickames..my name can't be shortened (my mom did that to all of my sisters and I on purpose because she's a Kristin (like you- almost, haha!) and always got called Kris and didn't like it) so nothing stemmed from my name, although sometimes she calls me LeaBea, or Lela. But Jake has given me soo many nicknames and I secretely love them all - he mostly calls me Boog (coming from Booger when I was being a stinker! haha) and any variation of Tiny and Smalls since I'm the midget in our group. Occasionally I get a sweet honey or babe. I call Jake Dear a lot, and my youngest sister thought that was "so gross" and makes fun of us by calling Jake Aardvark instead. haha.

Whew. How's that for world's longest comment explanation? Happy Tuesday! :)

Hi! I stumbled across your blog from one of my followers and I think your page is awesome! Interesting :)

My name is Katarina and when I was growing up my parents always called me Kate. Now all my friends call me Kat, Kata, K, Krate (which is a mix of my name and my sister Kris(tine)), Lips (b/c apparently I talk too much), and Chika. Haha not too interesting (besides Lips). But nice post! Never thought about my nicknames before! =)

I'm a lover of nicknames. Seriously, I give them to everybody. Expecially my husband and my kiddos. My little guy is certain his given name is buddy because that's what we've always called him. If you call him Jace (his real name) he corrects you - my names buddy. :) All my family calls me Kimmy. Most people call me Kim. My hubby has a million or so nicknames for me and all (like yours) are sickening, lovey-dovey names.

Huzzah for nicknames, however cheesy they are.
